The ATF released their first report on gun crimes in 20 years, with the new report covering 2017-2021. I thought some of you would think it's interesting.
Main takeaways...
1. Legally purchased firearms are being used in crimes sooner than ever, often either sold by or stolen from the original buyer
2. Over 1 million guns were stolen from private citizens from 2017-2021
3. Privately made firearms, "ghost guns," are a real problem. Their usage increased 1,083%!
4. Illegal machine gun conversion devices increased by 570%
5. Pistols were used in about 70% of crimes with guns, with 9mm by far being the most popular
6. Maybe the biggest problem... only 47.2% of law enforcement agencies participate in ATF's eTrace program, which tracks firearms used in crimes
Here's the ATF report:
Data for Charlotte:
And data for Winston:
If I'm reading it correctly, it looks like only 3.7% of the gun crimes in Winston were known to have been committed by the original buyer. 30.7% were definitely different, and 65.5% are unknown.
