This is exactly right. I switched to gas logs, with a blower, years ago. Nice, warm and cozy.

Could be several reasons for smoke on the wall. Fire built with the damper closed: Obstruction in the chimney; Backdraft; Improperly built fireplace. Reversing the old saying; Where there is fire there is smoke!!!

get a light and look down the chimney for obstructions .. turn your light off and continue to look down into the chimney for light coming through .. but it sounds like you not getting air flow.updraft.. .

I have a fireplace but I know nothing about it. The people who lived here before used it and the wall above it is black from smoke, but not sure why? We would like to use it to save on our power bill and our electric heat doesn't work that great anyways. Anybody know who can come out and check it out and tell me what is wrong or if it just needs to be cleaned??
