I've seen people do it before and I think it looks quite nice. Better than flat, boring sheet rock. Bleh...

The other half is trying to say that the paneling will bubble up and/or wrinkle with the weight of the paint.

Yes, I have and it turned out nice. Be sure to prime before painting.

Yes, but you will have to seal it with something like Kilz Primer before you paint.
